Reiki

A gentle Japanese tradition of hands-on energy, for calm, balance, and rest. Nothing to diagnose, nothing to fix. You lie back, and the work stays quiet.

What it is

A quiet kind of energy work.

Reiki is a gentle energy practice that began in Japan with Mikao Usui, who opened his first Reiki school in Tokyo in 1922. The name joins two words, rei and ki, often rendered as universal life energy.

The practitioner rests their hands lightly on or just above the body and acts as a channel for that energy, letting it settle where it's needed. There's no diagnosis and nothing to work out. It's quiet, and most people find it deeply relaxing.

The session

What it feels like.

You stay clothed and lie down, somewhere warm and quiet. Mike rests his hands lightly on or above you and moves slowly through a series of positions. There's nothing you need to do but let yourself be still.

Most people feel warmth, a softening, a slow drop into rest. Some drift off entirely. It tends to be the most low-key thing on the menu, and that's the point.

You leave calmer than you came, and many people sleep better that night.

What people come for

What it helps with.

People come to Reiki to unwind, to take the edge off stress, to rest when rest has been hard to come by. Many find it calming and grounding, a soft reset, alongside their own care.

What it sits alongside.

Reiki is the quietest thing on the menu, and it leaves you settled enough that other work lands more easily. A few that pair well with it:

What people ask.

Do I need to believe in it?

No. You don't have to believe anything for it to be a calm, restful hour. Come as you are, skeptical or curious, and simply notice how you feel afterward.

Is Reiki religious?

No. It came out of a Japanese spiritual background, but Usui meant it to be open to everyone, of any faith or none. There's nothing to sign on to.

How is this different from Chinese Energetic Medicine?

They're two different traditions, not two tiers of the same thing. CEM is the deep, targeted work: Mike reads a specific pattern and works it, often with homework. Reiki is the gentle one: no diagnosis, nothing to solve, just rest and rebalancing. If you're working on a specific condition, start with CEM. If you want to unwind and settle, Reiki is the softer door.

What actually happens in a session?

You lie down, clothed, and Mike rests his hands on or just above you for the hour, moving slowly through different positions. Most people find it warm and deeply relaxing. That's really the whole of it.
